Angry taxi drivers hit back at up-front badge chargesAngry taxi drivers have hit out at Braintree Council for “blackmailing” them into paying for new badges up to six months before they expire.
Robert Smith, 68, of Rose Hill, a self-employed private hire driver, has accused the council of causing hardship to drivers by asking them to pay for their annual Hackney carriage driver licence at the same time as other documents that take longer to process.
When taxi drivers are due a CRB renewal, the council ask them to pay for their annual badge with the same application - something Mr Smith says is an “unnecessary expense”.
He said: “I’m disgusted. It’s just an exercise to get money up front - it’s nonsense."
