Good Samaritan taxi driver is attacked on Gateshead taxi rank

Brian Watson, who was trying to break up a fight when he was punched to the floor, has issued a plea to catch his attacker

A taxi driver who played good Samaritan has spoken up after being attacked while trying to break up a fight.

Brian Watson, a self-employed cabbie of eight years, was picking up a fare on Durham Road, Gateshead, at midnight on September 28 when one of his passengers was attacked.

He tried to stop the fight and he was punched to the ground by an onlooker.

The 51-year-old of Swalwell, said: “I picked up two lasses and they were arguing with another two lasses. Then one came over and punched the other.

“They were half out and half inside the taxi so I went over to assist my passenger as I’m obliged to do and somebody’s come over and punched us in the back of the head.

“I fell and I hit my head on the pavement and I cracked my back on the curb.

“This is the first time I’ve had any trouble in this job - I’ve a none confrontational nature.”

Brian, a week after the attack, said while he was not seriously injured he has been left in pain following the attack and has been frustrated by a lack of police action to track down the offender.

He added: “I’ve no faith in the police.

“I can’t understand why thing haven’t been followed up.

“My back is killing me, I’ve a big cut on my head - it could have been a lot worse, I know it only takes a punch and you can be killed.

“Something had caught my eye and I’d moved my head, so instead of catching me right in the back of my head he caught the side.”

Brian said after speaking to another taxi driver he found out his attacker had been asked ‘why did you hit him’ only to reply ‘that’s what I do’.

He said: “The guy has done it to me and he’s going to do it to somebody else.

“This guy needs to be caught, he needs to be stopped.”

A police spokesman said the investigation into the incident was ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 6919 reference 41 28/9/14 alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
