See, if there is one thing on this site that boils my urine, it's the way plate values are made to be such a big deal. The list of plate values publishes only the sensational, megabuck cities. I bet there are hundreds of parishes like mine, that have never had high plate values, or values have been non existent. Go on TDO, put Lincoln on your list. last plate here changed hands for £3,500 (including cab!) three months ago. :-|

So how reliable is the source that states Blackpool plates are worth whatever? Did you see a reciept? Does anyone admit to paying or recieving money for plates? Only a few years ago City of Lincoln Council could not give away 50% of the plates that were available. There is no more evidence available for your figures than there are for mine. Call me a liar, if you like, but it's strange that the "Guinness book of plate values" only contain High values, and no low ones. And no Sussex, that is not because low value plates in restricted areas do not exist.

Blackpool plates premiums are not irrelevant, but the reason for the poor standards. Hartlepool, if you are right, have no reason for poor standards. But both councils should be ashamed to allow such standards in the first place.

And if a council has SUD, then they shouldn't reject plate applications. That's why a big thing is made of them.

I don't know about plate values being a big deal but vehicle quality and enforcement is down to each individual licensing Authority. It doesn't really matter if the authority is restricted or not but perhaps the point being made is that in many cases paying thousands for a plate is an unnecessary financial burden which may effect the owners ability to maintain a hackney carriage vehicle to the standard that is required. Oldham a few weeks ago is a classic case in point. Poor upkeep of vehicles both hackney and private hire is more down to personal circumstance than whether or not an authority is restricted. By the way, there are plate values not on that list which are equally compatible with the highest values so far published, so don't for one minute think that just because they are not on the list they are not relevant. Your reference to "hundreds" of parishes like yours is an exaggeration because there are not hundreds of authorities that restrict numbers. The actual figure is 57 with 48 still to make a decision so please let's not try and exaggerate too much when making these types of statements. Regards JD

All I said was that for any scientific study evidence provide by one person anonymously is not sufficiently robust to be used as evidence - ask Halcrow if you like, you know, they're the real professors with letters after their names etc, as you claimed in the past. Indeed, some of the ex-troublemakers on here criticised JD's values on that basis, until it was pointed out that values provided in this way were not relied upon. As for Blackpool, as streetcar said Halcrow (they're the ones with the real professors etc) used a figure of £37,000, and a Halton Council report said £40/45k for Blackpool. That's not to mention the results of JD's own investigations.
