Taxi drivers vent anger at meeting

ANGRY taxi drivers in Bristol turned up in force at last night's full council meeting to voice their concerns over out-of-town cabbies stealing their trade in the city.

Mourad Tighilt, secretary of the Bristol branch of the National Taxi Association, said that illegally picking up passengers in the street invalidated their insurance and was an offence.

"We are concerned about our livelihoods and we are suffering because of the unfair policies," he added.

He said taxi drivers had no confidence in the council's licensing office, which brought loud cheers of support from the 80 cabbies in the public gallery.

Mr Tighilt urged the council to overhaul its taxi policies and called for enforcement so flouting the regulations could be stamped out.

Earlier, Bristol mayor George Ferguson said, in answer to a councillor's question about illegal cabbies, that he was very concerned about the issue and regarded the matter as a priority.

He urged the taxi trade to continue working with the council in order to deal with the problem.
