Minicab driver had part of his ear bitten off in drunken attack by customer

Dane Hodkinson attacked Christopher Harrison after drinking 20 pints followed by jaeger bombs at a wedding

A minicab driver had part of his ear bitten off by a drunken passenger.

Dane Hodkinson, 26, launched the unprovoked attack on Christopher Harrison after drinking 20 pints followed by jaeger bombs at a wedding in St Helens.

Tom Watson, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court how the minicab driver went to pick Hodkinson up at McDonalds near the linkway in St Helens at 5am on July 13.

When he asked Hodkinson if he had any money he said he did not but told him: “I’m not f***ing getting out of your car”.

He then punched Mr Harrison in the head.

The two men got out of the minicab and punches were exchanged but Hodkinson pulled his victim’s t-shirt over his head, knocked him to the kerb and began to rain blows down on him.

Mr Harrison had pushed his panic button and was screaming for help as Hodkinson began to bite him on the fingers, elbow and finally took a chunk out of his ear.

He then wandered off to his girlfriend’s before being arrested by police.

Hodkinson smashed his head on the inside of the police van and tried to say they had assaulted him but the incident was caught on CCTV.

When he sobered up he said he remembered being in a “scuffle” but later pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The court heard that Hodkinson, of Westleigh Lane, Leigh, had previous convictions for possessing an offensive weapon, threatening behaviour and affray.

But when the judge found out he had admitted biting another man on the ear he said he had to adjourn the case to consider if he was to be sentenced as a “dangerous” offender.

Mr Harrison, who will require plastic surgery on his ear, said he was unable to return to work after what happened to him.
