Newcastle minicab driver in court for allegedly driving-off with passenger's leg stuck out door

Mohamman Maroufi entered no pleas to counts of dangerous driving and three other matters at Newcastle Magistrates' Court

A minicab driver has appeared in court after allegedly speeding-off with a passenger’s legs hanging out his car.

Mohamman Maroufi, of Blagdon Street, Newcastle, was in the dock at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court to face a charge of dangerous driving and two other offences.

The court heard the 28-year-old had picked-up three passengers in his cab on Grey Street, in Newcastle, and was driving along on nearby Sandyford Road on the evening of June 21 this year.

It was then alleged, while one of the female passengers was getting out, Maroufi sped-off, with her leg stuck out of the door.

It was then claimed he ignored her pleas to stop.

Maroufi entered no pleas to one count each of dangerous driving, driving with no insurance, driving a minicab not licensed as a hackney carriage and assault.

Rebecca Gibson, prosecuting, said the alleged assault related to another of the three passengers, a man.

She said: “We would say this is a category three offence and should be heard at the crown court.”

The court heard Maroufi was driving a Skodia Octavia at the time of the alleged incident.

Mark Humble, mitigating, made no representations about where the case she go.

Magistrates refused jurisdiction and the case was sent to Newcastle Crown Court.

Maroufi was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing on October 21`.
