Convoy of 70 taxis to parade through Plymouth for Alan Henning

A convoy of more than 70 taxis is to parade through Plymouth in memory of cabbie Alan Henning, who was beheaded by Islamic State after being taken hostage in Syria

Plymouth's Hackney carriage taxi drivers have organised the 'celebration drive' as a tribute to Mr Henning.

A spokesman for the group said: “I was gutted to hear about Alan, he was just a guy giving up his time and doing it selflessly for others.

"The taxi fraternity is quite tight and I think a lot of us were shocked by his death.

“We want to bring the taxi fraternity together from all cultural backgrounds and celebrate the life of Alan Henning. We have drivers of all faiths taking part. I’m sure there won’t be a dry eye on the day."

Alan Henning was a taxi driver from Manchester before becoming a humanitarian aid worker.

He was captured in Syria in December 2013 while carrying out voluntary work.

On October 3 2014, Islamic State (IS) released a video showing his execution – an act universally condemned by the Muslim community.

Mohamed Abu Muganzi, director of the Greenbank-based Piety Islamic centre, said: “We have condemned it in the strongest terms. What ISIS is doing is not in the teachings of our Prophet, peace be upon him. Everyone should condemn what these people are doing.

The convoy of drivers will meet on October 15 near Crownhill fire station.

The cabs are to set off at 1pm for a tour of the city following a route from Outland Road to Peverell Park Road, Mutley Plain, North Hill and up to the Hoe Road Promenade finishing at approximately 1.40pm.

So 70 hackney carriage taxi drivers have agreed to take part and other cabbies are invited to join them.

Interesting.

Are there different agendas at play here?

Moderate Muslims are now being forced to decide whose side they are on and make their position clear, as to what exactly Islam stands for and be seen to distance themselves from the more extreme elements of their religion. :-|

Something they probably should have been doing all long.

You can believe what you like about ISIS but all of these threats and be-headings are having a polarising effect on British Muslims and of course, Muslims around the world.

Oh and they need to start dealing with guys like Anjem Choudary.

What agenda do you think the organiser has in mind?

Knowing him quite well I think he just wants to show simple appreciation.

Making a donation is one thing. This is another. Many do both. I regret that due to a previous arrangement I won't be involved but I sincerely hope that the turn out will be large.

I don't think any that are taking part have hidden agendas but to be certain you would have to quiz every attendee.

It's not an agenda as such, more of a bringing people together to state their position, through their show of support for Alan Henning and his family. :-| However, you can't deny the polarising effect something like this has on communities of all faiths, the length and breadth of the country. :-|

Personally, I think he was a misguided fool for putting himself in that situation in the first place but he obviously had a big heart. :-|

Reliably informed the parade has over 100 cabs and there is no agenda other than solidarity and support for Alan Henning

Alan Henning: Plymouth taxi drivers' remembrance convoy

Taxis in convoy More than 150 taxis travelled in convoy to remember father-of-two

More than 150 cabbies in Plymouth have taken part in a drive in memory of murdered aid worker Alan Henning.

The 47-year-old taxi driver from Salford was killed in a video released by IS militants.

The taxis travelled in convoy and held a multi-faith service to remember the father-of-two.

Organiser Ken Bennett said: "The two hours of doing what we're doing today is nothing to a man losing his life doing what he could to help humanity."

He added: "We were very shocked to hear of the sudden murder of Alan Henning and we thought as a gesture of respect to his family we would drive from the outskirts of Plymouth to the city centre and have a short service of remembrance.

"Taxi drivers stick together. It doesn't matter what it is - we will stick together."

That clapping reminds me of some people as we drove through.

No hidden agendas Sussex.
