School meals are delivered by taxi after red-faced council chiefs run out of vans FOOD is being shipped to primary school campuses in the back of cabs, leading to an angry backash from union bosses School meals are being ferried to class by TAXI – after council chiefs ran out of vans. Cabs have been drafted in to transport food from central “production hubs” in Ayr and Troon. It follows the closure of a string of school kitchens earlier this year as part of council budget cuts. Now pre-cooked grub is being bundled into the back of cars before being dished up to primary kids across the county. Red-faced council bosses were forced to admit their shortcomings this week. But they claim cabbies dropping off food does NOT put quality at risk. Council director, Lesley Bloomer, insisted: “The mode of transport has no impact on food safety as we use the same insulated containers regardless of the vehicle carrying the containers.” Ms Bloomer confessed that school meals bound for St Patricks and Annbank are having to travel by taxi from their production kitchens. But she insisted “robust” safety procedures were ensuring high standards. She added: “We are aware of no concerns raised regarding the temporary use of taxis where we do not have a van and driver available at this current time.” However, union chiefs have blasted the move as “horrifying”. GMB official Paul Arkison said: “While I accept the meals will be of a high standard when they are cooked, I am sure many parents will be concerned about what standard the food will be in after they have been transported in this way. “The best place for the preparation of food is in the kitchen where it is going to be served and if that is not possible then at the very least food should be transported in council vehicles which can be properly monitored. “If the taxis are too busy what’s it going to be next to deliver the meals – the bus, the postman or if the food is getting cold maybe they could hire Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton to ensure it gets there quickly.” source: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local ... er-4470021 |

We have been doing school meal runs on and off for years. The food is in the same sealed containers if it goes in the county council minibus or a taxi. They don't have special vehicles. The buses take the kids to school, then do the school meal run before taking the kids home again. |

Quote: leading to an angry backash from union bosses Who's in charge..the LA or the Union..screw them and let them whine, the LA can hire who ever they want to do the Job. I'm sure the Food will arrive just as fit for purpose using a Taxi or PH driver as it would under the supervision of the average Council employee, maybe even more so. What exactly is "angry backash" anyway? |

Same round here, a guy who subcontracts to Smiths News delivering newspapers in the morning does the school meals run close to dinnertime. When it's done by the Council they'll do the same run in a normal van. |
