TRADE IS IN CHAOS Following your article 'Fees rise on cards for taxis in Plymouth' (Evening Herald, August 22) I felt I had to reply to Cllr Dann's comment, 'We cannot regulate this important trade with a deficit'. You clearly cannot regulate this important trade with whatever resources are available. Private hire drivers are free to pick up whoever they wish off any street corner, safe in the knowledge that they will not be caught out. They wait on taxi stands for alleged booked fares and form illegal ranks wherever they please to advertise themselves as taxis. Hackney carriages are to be seen forming their own taxi stands at convenient places around the city, often causing obstruction to the highways and other road users, an act that has gone on for so long so as to become the norm. Taxi stands that have been advertised in this very newspaper have never come to fruition. Where are the stands outside the Mannamead public house on Mutley Plain and outside the Mutley Crown, to mention just two? I am no mathematician, but is not a rise from £80 to £200 a 150 per cent increase in revenue? I hope the bodies that support these two trades in Plymouth, when they approach you for an increase in their fare tariff of similar proportion, will be looked upon just as favourably. Maybe if the authority climbed down from their ivory tower, stopped polishing their backsides on luxuriously comfortable seats and managed the trade as it should be - all the time, not just on a whim when overtime would suit - such an increase would be justified. From a severely hacked-off Plymouth taxi driver. |

From a severely hacked-off Plymouth taxi driver. another rant from a hack who cant see the wood for the trees, wondering why the public choose to phone for a PH rather than flag a HC. although there are a couple of places some of the more dubious PH driver from small firms blatently park up an wait for people to approch them. |
