TAXIS alleged to be operating illegally have been taken off the road across South West Wales.

Dyfed-Powys Police, Swansea Council and Neath Port Talbot Council have conducted checks and operated on information provided by the public since Saturday, in a bid to make the roads safe.

On Saturday, at around 11pm, officers from the Dyfed-Powys roads policing unit were conducting checks on the M4 at junction 48.

A vehicle was stopped, and following enquiries three vehicles were seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act for no insurance.

Enquiries are ongoing.

Meanwhile, in Port Talbot, three taxis were towed from the bus station on Tuesday.

“On 28th October officers of the Neath Port Talbot Licensing Team received information that a taxi firm that operates vehicles throughout Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Powys no longer had insurance,” said a Neath Port Talbot Council spokesman.

“Acting on the basis of that information officers attended the Port Talbot Bus Station Taxi Rank that day where they found two vehicles operated by the firm about to accept customers and a third vehicle entering the car park.

“Officers received confirmation from the Police that none of the vehicles were insured and immediately issued suspension notices preventing the use of the vehicles as taxis and then waited with the vehicles until the Police arrived.

“Acting under their powers the Police then seized the vehicles.

“We will be co-ordinating discussions with the Police to assess whether any legal action will arise out of this situation and, if so, the authority or authorities which will pursue that action.”

A Swansea Council spokesman added: “We take issues of this kind very seriously, which is why we started looking into the matter as soon as we were informed.

“We have taken action to prevent the uninsured vehicles being used and investigations are continuing.”

A spokesman for South Wales Police confirmed officers were involved in an operation in Port Talbot on Tuesday.

I remember a few years back being pulled by a police car. What made the situation quite funny was the fact i was undertaking a NVQ assessment and had the assessor on board at the time.
Anyway i was asked to walk back to their BMW and sit in the back.
Police officer said I had come up on ANPR as non insured. I explained i was and that i had a fleet policy with Tradex.
He called Tradex.......they said no there is no insurance on vehicle.
So at this point my taxi was about to be seized which would of left me and an NVQ assessor stranded about 14 miles out of town.
At this point I said can you call my broker and get them to look into it, which the officer agreed to.
Luckily a few mins later we go a phone call back to say that Tradex had been using a lot of agency staff and that for some reason my car had not been added to database and that it had been insured all the time.
I was then allowed to go on my way.
NVQ guy said it was his longest assessment ever and that normally he would ask a question about being stopped by authorities but it this case it was not needed as i had demonstrated for real what to do ha.
Ive always wondered if Tradex would of paid my release fee if the officer had not taken some extra time to do some digging tho
