Freddie Mercury, Little Red Riding Hood and Ziggy Stardust rescue injured cab driver A SOUTHPORT taxi driver had to be taken to hospital after a he was rescued from road traffic collision by four fancy dress clad heroes.
The Central Cabs driver suffered a substantial neck injury during the collision with a hackney cab on Lord Street shortly after midnight on November 1 and could not move from his car.
Luckily a group of four friends who had recently returned from a Halloween fancy dress party at nearby Boulevard West, were passing the scene and witnessed the accident, immediately running over to help and administer first aid.
Chris Livingstone, Bar Manager at The Sandgrounder Pub, was one of those who went to give first aid and told The Champion that it was one of the most surreal incidents he has ever been involved in.
He said: “We were walking towards the town centre when we heard this almighty bang and saw that two taxis had crashed into each other near the Lord Street rank.
”One of the drivers got out but the other stayed in his car holding his neck in pain so we ran over and tried to help. I was dressed as Little Red Riding Hood and got into the passenger seat to talk to the driver and see if he was alright - a lot needed to be done between calling the ambulance and diverting traffic so we all set about helping in our fancy dress!“
Chris's friend Phil Davenport, who was masquerading as Ziggy Stardust, phoned the emergency services while another man, who did not want to be named, was dressed as Freddie Mercury and directed traffic around the scene of the accident.
Chris continued: ”It was a good job Freddie had a bright yellow jacket on so he could be seen by the traffic!
“There was glass and debris all over the road and some cars were driving fast over it and bursting their tyres so we needed to make sure as well there were no other accidents.
”My wife Angela, who had come as a witch, was there as well and helped give first aid while we waited for the ambulance to arrive.
“Nobody else really stopped to check on how the driver was - we were the only people who stopped to help. I felt really bad for Ian, the driver, who was clearly in a great deal of pain but he must've had had to stop and wonder what on earth was going on when he was rescued by Little Red Riding Hood, Freddie Mercury, Ziggy Stardust and a witch!
”It was like something out of Only Fools and Horses where Del Boy and Rodney are dressed as Batman and Robin when they accidentally save the day and stop a robbery.
“The look on the face of the paramedic when he showed up was priceless - he didn't know what to say!
”Afterwards we had to try and push the cab into the side of the road so it was out of the way but the front driver's side wheel was completely ruined and there was no way we could move it.“
The Central Cabs driver was later taken to Southport hospital where he was treated for a severe neck injury and minor cuts and bruises.
The driver of the Hackney Cab also involved in the collision was assessed by paramedics at the scene but was not taken to hospital.
