Public called on to report taxi firms’ out-of-town driversThe chairman of Crawley Borough Council’s licensing committee has called on the public to report taxi firms who employ drivers who are not licensed to work in the town.
Cllr Michael Jones (Lab, Bewbush) said ongoing investigations into the issue had yielded no “firm evidence” it was happening.
He added: “All I can say is that if members of the public notice their private hire vehicle has a plate registered from outside the borough, they should report it to the council, stating where they were picked up, dropped off and when.
“The council takes this matter extremely seriously, and the public should be aware that private hire firms who flout the law in this way are exposing them to being carried by drivers who may not have valid insurance to carry them.”
He added: “Clearly private hire firms are not permitted to use drivers who are licensed by other councils if they do not hold a Crawley license as well for jobs beginning in the borough.
