Drunk teen groped Carlisle taxi driverA drunk teenager groped a woman taxi driver as she was taking him home from a night out.
North Cumbria Magistrates’ Court heard how 19-year-old Jonathan Stephen Rickerby got into a taxi outside Carlisle train station on October 4 and asked to be driven to his home.
During the journey he explained to the driver that he had been out drinking with friends in Lloyd’s bar and Concrete before deciding to leave.
When the taxi reached the roundabout in Caldewgate, Rickerby asked the driver to perform a sex act. The shocked driver carried on driving but he then pulled his jeans and underwear down to his knees
Lisa Hine, prosecuting, said: “She was so frightened by what had happened.”
Rickerby then leaned towards her and grabbed her left breast on top of her clothing.
The driver informed her partner via telephone that the incident had taken place and that she was in the process of contacting police.
Miss Hine added: “The touching was sexual. She feels utterly shocked and repulsed by the incident.”
When interviewed by police Rickerby, who lives at The Willows in Oughterby near Carlisle, said he had no recollection of the event but conceded it must have been him. He then apologised for committing the offence and admitted it in court.
Steven Marsh, defending, told the court that the teenager was a man of good character and that he had never been in trouble with police before.
He added that he was a hard-working young man and had a good job working for his family’s landscaping business.
Magistrates handed Rickerby a four-month curfew and was placed on a three-year supervision order. He must also attend a sexual offenders group program.
He was also ordered to pay the victim £100 in compensation and will have to sign the sex offenders register for five years.
