Hire cars and taxis in Midlothian to be fitted with CCTV and audio recording equipment




Taxi or private car hire licence holders in Midlothian can now use CCTV and audio recording devices in their vehicles.

The new policy is not mandatory but is designed to prevent and detect crime, reduce the fear of crime and enhance the safety of taxi and private hire car drivers, as well as their passengers, according to the licensing authority.

If CCTV systems are equipped with a sound recording facility, the function should only be used if there is deemed to be a threat to driver or passenger safety.

Recordings will be held either by taxi and private car hire licence holders or a third party service provider.

However, requests for images and audio can be made not only by law enforcement agencies and insurance companies, but “other appropriate bodies”.
