Machete pair jailed after village store robbery TWO men who took part in a terrifying robbery when staff at a village store were threatened with a large machete have been jailed. Christopher Burton, 29, one of three masked men who entered the Co-op store at Leeswood near Mold, was jailed for seven-and-a-half years. Minicab driver Paul Anthony Dillworth, 33, the getaway driver who remained in the car, was jailed for seven years. Two other men had never been caught. Burton and Dillworth, both of Walton, Liverpool, cried when they were jailed at Mold Crown Court. Mr Justice Openshaw said it was a very bad case of robbery with many aggravating features. It had been carefully planned and the getaway car had been fitted with stolen number plates. They targeted and selected a vulnerable village store and the offence involved a number of robbers acting together. Staff were truly terrified when confronted by the men, one of whom had a machete. More than £1,000 was taken and it would have been more but for the fact there was a time lock on the second safe. It had the hallmarks of a ruthless and professional robbery with so many aggravating features that it was in the top category for sentence for such offences, the judge explained. Burton had a very bad criminal record including a previous one for robbery and was on prison licence at the time. “I accept he now bitterly regrets what he has done but he has committed a dreadful crime and must now pay the price,” he said. Burton denied he had the machete but the judge said that made no difference, it was a joint enterprise in which all were involved. Dillworth was the getaway driver but that was an important role in the team. David Mainstone, prosecuting, said it was shortly before closing time one night in April when the three masked men went into the store and confronted the lone cashier. The man with the machete jumped over the counter, ushered her into a rear room where there was a second member of staff. They demanded that they open the safe and one containing £1,000 in loose change was opened but the second had a time lock. The staff were ordered to get bags and the robbers fled with the cash, leaving the victims shocked and traumatised. The woman cashier later told how she had been shaking throughout. Witnesses saw the robbers run to a waiting blue Mondeo car and they were driven off by a fourth man, who turned out to be Dillworth. Police recovered a number plate – which had a short time earlier been stolen off a car in the car park of the Druid Inn at Pontblyddin – at Oak Villas in Leeswood. Blood on it matched that of Burton who was arrested. His mobile phone showed he’d had a number of conversations with Dillworth shortly before the robbery and he was arrested and his blue Mondeo minicab seized. Paul Smith, defending Dillworth, said he was a working man who had worked on the railways. He became a minicab driver and got to know some people and found himself out of his depth. As the getaway driver he was not physically involved in the robbery. He was genuinely sorry. Rachel Oakdean, for Burton, said her client was at a turning point. He wanted a normal family life and had two weeks of that with his partner and new baby before he was arrested. He was genuinely sorry for what he had done. He maintained he succumbed to temptation after an invitation from others. The defendant was adamant he did not have the machete. Following the sentencing yesterday, Det Chief Insp Alun Oldfield said: “These are two dangerous individuals who have history of violent offences. “They have received substantial sentences after travelling into North Wales to commit this crime which had a significant impact on the community and more so on the people in the shop at the time. “I hope this will serve as a warning that North Wales Police will bring such criminals to justice.” Det Sgt Simon Kneale said “North Wales Police will continue to work with the courts to deal with such offenders robustly, in order to ensure that our communities remain a safe place to live and work.” source: http://www.newsnorthwales.co.uk/news/14 ... bbery.aspx |
