Man charged after taxi driver Thomas Milligan collapses and dies following row with passengers in cab

A MAN was arrested and charged last night over the incident in which the 55-year-old died in Midlothian in the early hours of Sunday.

A TAXI driver collapsed and died after a bust-up with passengers.

Tragic Thomas Milligan was dropping off the punters in Midlothian when an argument broke out in his cab.

The 55-year-old is alleged to have been pushed about just moments before he took ill and collapsed in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police have launched an investigation and said they are treating Thomas’s death as suspicious.

It’s the second tragedy to hit the family after the death of Thomas’s brother-in-law a few weeks ago.

Thomas was driving a taxi for Star Cars in Dalkeith, owned by his brother Stephen.

The dead man’s three children, Tammara, Dean and Craig, and wife Anne were being comforted by relatives last night.

Dozens of tributes have been posted on social media by friends and relatives stunned by the tragedy.

Last night, a family member, who asked not to be named, said: “We just don’t know what has happened yet.

“The police are still trying to establish the circumstances and we won’t know any more until the post mortem.

“We are all in shock. Tam was a great guy and well-known in the town. It’s a terrible tragedy for the family.”

A police source said: “We know he had an argument and a fight broke out.

“As far as we believe, Thomas told the people to calm down and became the focus of their aggression.

“He collapsed a few moments later and died.”

The area around Lauder Road where Thomas collapsed was sealed off to allow police and forensic teams to carry out inquiries.

It’s understood a postmortem will be carried out tomorrow.

Detective Inspector Mark Henderson said: “We are treating this death as suspicious. We are appealing for witnesses and urge anyone who was in the area of Lauder Road and East House Road in Dalkeith around 1.20am on Sunday to call police on 101.”

Last night, police confirmed a man aged 22 had been charged in connection with the incident. He is expected to appear in court today.
