"Nobody can travel with any degree of assurance or safety in a minicab" : Judge Michael Sayers QC.

I think Judge Michael Sayers QC is being a bit myopic, as millions of people elect of their own volition to use that service, obviously they do not subscribe to his personal view.

Or are forced by their employers, who have signed a new contract with a Minicab company to transport them home? :?

Given that most Minicab drivers are made up from the ranks of foreign nationals / refugees with uncheckable backgrounds, these storys will continue for years to come.

Why does none of London's indiginous population want to work as a minicab driver?

Hmmmmm :-k

Taxi boss quits

BRUM'S taxi leader has left his highly-paid position after a revolt amongst drivers.

Mohammed Rashid, chairman of the Birmingham and Solihull Taxi Association and the city's most powerful cab driver, resigned his position after a stormy meeting.

Mr Rashid's five-year tenure came to an end after more than 900 members signed a petition calling for him to step down.

The controversial boss hit the headlines earlier this year when the Evening Mail reported how he admitted assaulting his lover in a jealous rage.

At Wolverhampton Crown Court, Mr Rashid, from Sparkhill, was sentenced to a community punishment order, giving him 100 hours unpaid labour as well as paying £1,000 compensation and £250 court costs.

The association has also recently been hit by a new regime at New Street Station - previously only its members could operate there, but now any hackney carriage can pick up fares.

Association secretary Mike Shingler said: "There have obviously been problems and basically members were fed up with him.

"We had the New Street issue, other trade issues and we had fallen out with just about everybody, including the city council.

"We now have got a lot of hard work ahead."

Mr Rashid, aged 36, said: "I worked very hard for the good of the trade. I decided to step aside and let somebody else have a try and see if they can do a better job.

"I will still remain a member of the association and I will always be a member.

"I negotiated the airport contract which was a big thing at the time. I am happy with my record."

The chairman's salary was also cut from £15 per hour to £11.

New chairman is driver Irfaan Ahmed, 44, from Sheldon, who works at Birmingham Airport.

I know many that have for a very short time, but then they become real cab drivers. They do the knowledge.
