Taxi driver found guilty of careless drivingA TAXI driver from Portland has been found guilty of careless driving after he hit a late-night reveller.
George Dacey, 37, of East Weare Road, was acquitted of dangerous driving by a jury at Dorchester Crown Court, but found guilty of the lesser charge of careless driving.
The court heard how Dacey had knocked down Samuel Hall in St Mary Street, Weymouth, on March 8 this year. Prosecutor Tom Wright told the jury Mr Hall was walking towards McDonald’s after a night out with a friend in Weymouth.
The court heard the pair decided to “wind up” and “shout abuse” at people as they drunkenly thought it would be funny, including Dacey, who was driving his Streetcars taxi down the street.
The jury was shown CCTV footage of the incident, in which the two approached Dacey’s car before the car moved to its left and knocked down Mr Hall, resulting in him needing hospital treatment for back injuries the following day.
Taking to the witness stand, Dacey told the jury he had been trying to avoid the two as he thought they were going to walk in front of him.
He was fined £250 and given four points on his licence.
