Taxi driver takes snaps of bad tippers and then posts pictures online with insults - calling one man 'Shrek'

A TAXI driver has been branded a "disgrace" for apparently taking pictures of his passengers and posting them online with comments about whether they tipped him or not.

The cabbie tweeted the images with the passenger's names and addresses and was less than complimentary about those that just paid the basic fare.

He referred to one man he dropped off in Llanelli as "Shrek".

The behaviour has been condemned by the managing director of one Swansea taxi firm.

Peter Eglitis, boss of Eastside Cabs, said: "That is appalling.

"In Swansea, such behaviour is very much frowned upon in the taxi community and when something like this happens it is very poor for the trade."

He explained that every taxi driver must now undergo an enhanced version of a CRB check to ascertain whether the applicant is a "fit and proper person".

"This guy does not sound like a fit and proper person and should not be granted his licence," Mr Eglitis said.

"If that happened in Swansea they would suspend him straight away — it is very, very bad."

The driver, who allegedly operates out of the Llanelli area, has also had his actions slammed by one of the town's councillors.

"It sounds like it has quite a disturbing side to it," councillor John Jenkins said.

"I'm pretty sure the licensing department would take a very dim view of that."

As well as the negative comments, the taxi driver also appears to have tweeted positive comments about passengers that tipped him.

Mr Eglitis stressed taking pictures of passengers and discussing them on the internet was not common among taxi drivers in South Wales.

"It is more professional than ever before," he said.

"Our priority is the safety of the customer and confidentiality is paramount."

UPDATED: Taxi driver apologises for Twitter insults that were 'a bit of fun'

THE cabbie that was branded a disgrace for taking pictures of his passengers and tweeting them criticising them for not tipping, has apologised for his behaviour.

Richard Evans – a taxi driver for more than 10 years – said: “It was just meant to be a bit of fun and I didn’t want to offend anyone."

Mr Evans admitted tweeting images of passengers including their names, addresses and comments about whether they gave him a tip.

On one occasion the Llanelli taxi driver referred to one of his fares as "Taxi for Shrek".

“Yes I took pictures of four or five customers with my comments for my friends to see," Mr Evans said.

"It was all just a joke.

“I apologise if anyone has been upset and I will take them down.

"I value all my customers and I want them to be happy."

The action caused outrage from the Peter Eglitis, the managing director of Eastside Cabs in nearby Swansea.

Mr Eglitis said: "This guy does not sound like a fit and proper person and should not be granted his licence."

The taxi boss said Mr Evans's behaviour did not reflect the behaviour of the majority of taxi drivers in south Wales, which he described as "more professional than ever before".

Evening Post readers have also reacted with shock.

On Facebook, Alex Davies said: "Invasion of privacy! They should be grateful of a tip whether it be 5p or 50p. You don't walk into primark and tip the cashiers for putting your clothes in a bag!"

However, Ashley Burton said: "In a way I agree with d taxi driver, especially private hire ones as they need CCTV in their cabs provided by the councils just for their protection, and if that includes tips, then so be it."

A driver round here put a list on facebook of customers who hadn't paid him. Some of his friends were encouraging him to do it and also offering to "sort the customers out" for him. #-o

Carmarthenshire Council to investigate photo tweeting taxi driver

CARMARTHENSHIRE Council's public protection department plans to investigate the cabbie who was branded a disgrace for taking pictures of his passengers and tweeting them, criticising them for not tipping.

Richard Evans — a taxi driver for more than 10 years — yesterday apologised, saying: "It was just meant to be a bit of fun and I didn't want to offend anyone."

Mr Evans admitted tweeting images of passengers including their names, addresses and comments about whether they gave him a tip.

Carmarthenshire Council, which is responsible for taxi licences within the county where Mr Evans works, has commented on the photos.

Public health services manager Sue Watts said: "This is not the kind of behaviour we would expect of one of our licensed taxi drivers and we will be carrying out further investigations and acting accordingly."

On one occasion the Llanelli taxi driver referred to one of his fares as "Taxi for Shrek".

"Yes I took pictures of four or five customers with my comments for my friends to see," Mr Evans said.

"It was all just a joke.

"I apologise if anyone has been upset and I will take them down.

"I value all my customers and I want them to be happy."

The action caused outrage from Peter Eglitis, the managing director of Eastside Cabs in nearby Swansea.

Mr Eglitis said: "This guy does not sound like a fit and proper person and should not be granted his licence."

Evening Post readers gave views on Facebook. Alex Davies said: "Invasion of privacy. They should be grateful for a tip, whether it be 5p or 50p. You don't walk into Primark and tip the cashiers for putting your clothes in a bag."

And Lauren Hughes said: "Sometimes I just about have enough to cover the fare never mind give a tip."

However, John Burns said: "I just don't understand why he didn't turn this into a positive. Imagine if he'd have tweeted with a picture 'Great client, thanks for using my services, have a great day need a cab, call me' or something similar, he'd have had great reviews."

Suspension for Llanelli taxi driver who mocked passengers on Twitter

A LLANELLI taxi driver who took pictures of his passengers and mocked them on Twitter will face a 21-day licence suspension.

In October, Richard Lee Evans posted pictures of his customers, their names, addresses, calling them such names as “Shrek”.

Mr Evans apologised through the media for his actions, calling it “a bit of fun”, but the matter was brought before a licensing inquiry at Carmarthenshire Council.

At an inquiry it emerged that a man known as Jason, who Mr Evans had called “Shrek”, is registered blind and suffers with a number of disabilities.

Public health services manager Sue Watts provided statements before the licensing committee yesterday on the impact Mr Evans’s actions had on his photographed customers.

Reading a letter on behalf of Jason’s auntie, Ms Watts said: “Mr Evans has humiliated my nephew by taking his picture and referring to him as ‘Shrek’.

“As a family we are proud of how our nephew deals and copes with his disability.

“He tries to lead a normal life and to fit in with society.

“Since the incident we have seen a change in his personality — he has become withdrawn, has lost confidence and believes that people in the community are now pointing at him and calling him Shrek.

“Mr Evans chose four elderly people and one blind person to have a joke with his friends. Vulnerable people.”

Mr Evans said he had seen Jason yesterday morning, the first time he had seen him since the incident had occurred, and had apologised to him.

The committee also heard a statement from the daughter of one of the elderly ladies Mr Evans had photographed.

It heard that following Mr Evans posting the woman’s picture on Twitter he visited her home to explain what he had done and that he had hoped she would not complain as he might lose his job.

The letter went on to say that, confused by the visit, the elderly woman thought she had done something wrong that would cause Mr Evans to lose his job, and spent sleepless nights worrying about it.

“She is now very distressed, and also frightened that if action is taken he may come to the house again,” the letter read.

“I am appalled that someone in a position of trust could act in this irresponsible, vindictive way.”

Speaking at the inquiry, Mr Evans said: “I want to clean up the mess that I have made.

“The Mr Evans that you see today is the Mr Evans the taxi driver — polite, always smartly dressed.

“I admit it was very foolish and there was no malice intended.

“I want to apologise to everyone that I have harmed or caused offence to.”

The licensing committee chose to suspend Mr Evans of his taxi licence for 21 days.
