YELLOW TAXI FIRM HOPES TO FLAG DOWN ALL-BLACKS A taxi firm known for its yellow cabs is threatening legal action against Leicester City Council's plans for an all-black fleet. Swift Taxis fears its business will be hit hard if councillors vote in favour of black cabs on Monday. At the moment, hackney carriages can be any colour, provided that they are the London-style cab design. The council is also set to let drivers use another make, the Peugeot Eurocab. To ensure that the public recognises the new model as a cab, the council wants to ensure that all Leicester cabs licensed from next month are painted black. Swift Taxis, of Churchgate, Leicester, operates about 40 yellow cabs and 120 yellow private-hire cars. Managing director Michael Norton said: "Swift Taxis are yellow and we have worked hard to get the public to understand we are yellow. "Corgi even does a toy car in our livery. You can buy a model yellow cab in the shops. "If we have to change our colours to black, it will wreck our image completely.It will be awful for us. "We are going to take legal action if they decide to do this and we will go to the local government ombudsman." Mr Norton said that even though he would not have to repaint his existing fleet because the scheme would be phased in, it could still cause confusion as some of the yellow cabs could still be on the roads for the next decade. The council's ruling cabinet is due to take a final decision on whether to enforce a black livery for cabs on Monday. Transport spokesman, Councillor John Mugglestone, said: "Mr Norton doesn't have to paint any of his existing yellow cabs. It's a gradual phasing in. "Some of the existing taxis in Leicester are so colourful that they look like dodgems. We want to ensure that taxis are easily identifiable." Kully Singh, secretary of the taxi drivers' union RMT, defended the council's proposed policy, which he said would ensure the public recognised cabs when the Peugeots were brought into use. He said: "There are 308 hackney carriages in Leicester and more than 200 of us signed a petition to say we're happy to have black cabs. "We are the majority. If Mr Norton has yellow cabs, that's his loss, but we think that black cabs with a council crest on the bonnet will be distinctive for the public." |
