Man racially abused taxi driver and fled without paying A MAN pulled the handbrake on a taxi and racially abused the driver after he tried to get out without paying, a court heard. Charlie Jupp, 18, of Vicars Cross Road, Vicars Cross, pleaded guilty at West Cheshire Magistrates Court to two counts of making off without payment and one count of provoking fear of violence which was racially aggravated. Rob Youds, prosecuting, said the first incident happened on February 13 last year when Jupp and another man ran off from a taxi driver who had taken them from Ellesmere Port to Vicars Cross, at a cost of £15. The second incident happened on March 3 when the same two men took a taxi from Neston to Hoole. When they arrived in Hoole they told the taxi driver, Mohammed Rahmen, they couldn’t pay the fee of £23.50. Mr Rahmen then locked the taxi’s doors and began driving to the nearest police station. Mr Youds said the two men began shouting at Mr Rahmen and when they stopped at a roundabout Jupp leant forward and tried to pull the taxi’s handbrake and in the process hit Mr Rahmen’s head. Mr Youds said Jupp shouted at the driver to let him out and racially abused him, but this was disputed by Jupp. Elizabeth Kenny, defending, said Jupp came from a decent family but had gone off the rails after joining the wrong crowd. Ms Kenny said at the time Jupp had been smoking large quantities of cannabis which had affected his behaviour. She also said Jupp’s family is due to move to the Caribbean in February as Jupp’s stepfather has a new job and she said any community order would mean he would be left without his family and homeless while trying to complete the order. Magistrates imposed a three-week 7pm-7am curfew on Jupp for the racially aggravated offence and fined him £200 per offence for making off without payment. They also ordered him to pay £7.50 and £11.75 in compensation to the two taxi drivers for their fares and a further £100 to Mr Rahmen. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £40 within 14 days. source: http://www.chesterfirst.co.uk/news/1428 ... aying.aspx |
