Taxi drivers want 'restrictive' paint-job policy dropped

Requests from taxi drivers to scrap a requirement that Hackney Carriages should be decked out in Royal Borough colours should be considered, a council report recommends.

A petition signed by 168 Hackney Carriage drivers asks the borough to remove the requirement for cabbies to have their cars painted in Royal Borough colours.

It says the rules are 'restrictive' and give mini-cab drivers an advantage on the private market.

It adds: "We are unable or have lost our executive work.

"More vehicles are looking for rank space for this reason, and causing inconvenience to the residents in town."

The drivers argue instead that all Hackney Carriages be painted white to distinguish them from private hire cabs.

The petition asks for permission to use the back of cars to advertiser Royal Borough tourist sites, and asks the council to let drivers register wheelchair accessible cars that are under five years old, instead of three.

A report to be heard by the licensing panel at Maidenhead Town Hall on Tuesday asks councillors to consider the requests.

I'd sooner Taxis be painted one colour than any colour they can get at the auctions. Having them one colour gets away from that Car Auction car park look that's blighting the ranks up and down the country.

a wee bit more on this

Hackney Carriage drivers petition for private hire vehicles to be banned from being white in Royal Borough

CABBIES in Windsor and Maidenhead are making a bid to ban their private hire vehicle rivals from being allowed to operate in white cars.

Hackney Carriage drivers in the Royal Borough have submitted a petition with 168 signatures asking for the council to revoke rules which state Royal Borough livery must be printed on their vehicles. They are calling for Hackney Carriages to be white vehicles with a small emblem on their front doors.

To avoid confusion, Hackney Carriage drivers are also calling for private hire vehicles to be barred from being white in colour. Drivers argue they lose private/executive work due to the current rules implemented in April 2012.

The petition also calls for advertising to be permitted on the rear half of Hackney Carriage vehicles to promote tourism in the borough, claiming Legoland, Windsor Castle and both Windsor and Ascot racecourses are interested in advertising on Hackney Carriages.

The petition will be discussed at a meeting of the Royal Borough Licensing Panel on Tuesday from 6pm at the Town Hall, in St Ives Road, Maidenhead.

The meeting is open to the public to attend.

When I had a white motor you couldn't see the dust that collects on the paintwork, when I got a darker coloured motor within an hour of going to the car wash you could see the road dust that had collected on it.
