Criminal past blights Radnor Park student's taxi application

A COLLEGE student has learned he must take responsibility for his crimes before being granted a licence for taxiing in Clydebank.

DRIVING: The student wanted to earn cash while studying by being a cabbie

Steven Crombie, of 10 Graham Avenue, has been told the licensing committee of West Dunbartonshire Council will not give him a taxi licence despite his efforts to leave a life of crime behind.

Mr Crombie has five previous convictions for violence and driving with only a provisional licence and driving without insurance. He served a seven-month prison sentence after being found guilty of carrying a knife.

Councillors also heard a list of 13 additional crimes for which Mr Crombie was charged but was not brought before the courts. Some of these he said he “disagreed” with.

Explaining alcohol had been at the route of all his criminal convictions, he said: “Since I have come out of prison I have done nothing wrong. I put myself through college, I got my driving licence. I have brought my certificates that I got from college to prove to you that I am not the person that’s being put forward here.

I’m trying to go to college and university and I want to earn money whilst I do that. I want a chance to get on with my life.” But councillors expressed concerns about his criminal past.

Councillor Jonathan McColl said Mr Crombie lacked experience as a driver, adding: “You continue to try and make excuses even for the convictions, not just the things on the list.

For someone to move on but not take responsibility for what they have done and to justify things... I don’t think you are there yet.” -
