Security alert scheme for taxis

Drivers would be updated via alerts
London taxi drivers will be sent text messages about major security alerts as part of a new service.
The City Cabwatch scheme will send messages to mobile phones, containing information about road closures and other security information.

Initially the City, Canary Wharf and Westminster will be covered but City of London Police hope to roll out the programme across the city.

The police said it would allow them to keep these areas moving in a crisis.

A City of London Police spokesman said it would enable them to direct taxis away from an area if it is unsafe or to an area if they are needed to transport people.

'Security procedures'

Drivers who sign up to the free service will also get regular updates from the police about the situation.

More than 2,000 businesses in the Square Mile and Canary Wharf are already signed up to the City of London Police Priority Alert scheme.

Should a major incident occur, they will receive email, text and pager alerts allowing them to put their evacuation and security procedures into action.

Taxi operator Computer Cab registered its fleet of 3,500 vehicles on Tuesday to kick-start the scheme.

I see from your signature GBC you are advocating joining the LTDA, just as a matter of interest is that only available to drivers licensed in London, it strikes me that there is enough commonality in the trade, as regards some of the issues, to make it worthwhile for drivers from other areas to join.

Surely by 'commonality' you can't mean 'the trade' in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Brighton, Blackpool etc, that can't get enough drivers into the trade, and the LTDA, that takes the opposite view? :-k

Ermm? I don't know! :-k

I think its for the London trade, click on the 'contact' button on their home page and ask, it cannot do any harm.

What are you doing about your Metro after this July deadline for Euro 3?

I was speaking to Trevor under the arches at Cambridge Heath Road yesterday, he reckons its all going to get put back another year (again) as only a few dozen systems have been fitted for evaluation.

Which leaves 16'500 Taxi's that need converting in under 10 months!!

Only TFL could come up with that classic.

Still old Ollie and Blobby must be getting excited, all these Taxi's in limbo.

I expect I might knock the 'Taxi' sign off the roof and join Ollie and Blobby.

If that's the case why do I read that the illegal 'mini-cab' situation is getting worse?

And if the LTDA are so good, then why did they sell off their 'Crown Jewels' to the foreigners? :-k

They may share the same premises, but the ComCab operation has been a seperate entity for a number of years.

Different board of management to the drivers representatives side, etc.

But I agree to the extent that the selling of ComCab, and teaming up with a LPH operator has not gone down well with some of their membership (ComCab), to the extent they are desparate to get more drivers on board.

Dial a Cab used to have a long waiting list as it was regarded as one of the best around.

A fellow driver that I know appplied three weeks ago, he's got his interview next week.

Now i've never been on the radio, so this is all very amusing for me, let all the Minicabs cover the pre-booked jobs, and let us get back to serving the street, station and airport work.

Given that theres such a huge problem with the opposition recruiting and retaining drivers, I might get back to the days of just working North London of a night, as people call for a Minicab and are told they will have to wait an hour, they'll soon work it out its 10 times quicker to go outside and hail a Taxi.
