Look, it's Joe and le taxi Sep 26 2005

Liverpool Echo

THE future is bright, the future is yellow, for Joe Swindells.

His redundancy last year after eight years as a business trainer for Royal & SunAlliance put him on a new road of opportunity.

For Joe, 30, from Hollyfield Road, Orrell, has imported and renovated a 36-year-old New York yellow cab for hire by parties or corporate clients.

He said: "I wanted to do something completely different and had always been interested in cars and engines.

"Limos are 10 a penny and I thought this would be something different. It's a real head turner."

The New York Checker cab is the type used in the cult Robert de Niro film Taxi Driver and the US TV comedy Taxi.

Joe's cab was made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1969.

Joe added DVD screens and neon lighting and is targeting the leisure, corporate and even film sectors for hire.

From his website:

Quote:
Are you bored with stretch limos? Do you see a tacky 25ft long car drive past every time you pop down to the shops or nip in to town?

So he certainly doesn't seem to like the limos.

But if his idea catches on, then his yellow cab will soon be ten a penny as well :?

JOES REPLY TO MY E-MAIL Hi. That's no problem.
The law is quite strict on this and Liverpool City Council are keen to ensure that unlicenced vehicles are not operating in the city.
They state that if a vehicle has less than 8 seats it must be licenced as Private Hire and the driver a licensed Private Hire Driver. Anything above this must be a PSV with the driver holding the appropriate licence.
At present I am in the process of obtaining Private Hire Status with Liverpool City Council. And hope to be in receipt of the appropriate licences shortly, having already copleted the council's application forms, medical assessment and Criminal Records Check. Therefore, at the moment I am only able to offer the following services, which fall outside the rules set by the council.

7 Day Contract hire.
Wedding Hire
Funeral Hire
Events wholly taking place on private property and not on public roads.

Big Apple Rides does not wish to operate outside the law, and as such we have in place an Executive and Private Hire Insurance Policy and also Public Liability Insurance from Footman James Insurance Company Ltd. a specialist insurance broker.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks

Joe
