In the line of duty: Determined copper jumps onto illegal taxi’s roof
In a scene reminiscent of a 1980s action movie, a police officer went the extra mile in trying to stop an illegal taxi by jumping on the moving vehicle’s roof.
The 39-year-old policeman was involved in a crackdown on illegal taxis when he found himself on the roof of the rogue cab.
Chinese policeman Guan Chaoyuan spoke of the incident from his hospital bed: ‘I and my partner had stopped the taxi and wanted to see the driver’s licence, but he refused to open the door or wind down the window.
‘My partner was knocking on the window for him to open it, and I was standing at the front to stop him driving off.
‘But then he put his foot down anyway, and in order to prevent myself from being run over, I had to jump onto the top of the taxi and then found myself clinging on as it sped off.’
He is currently being treated for concussion, a damaged spine, compressed lung and bruises on his face and legs.
This incredible scene was caught on traffic cameras in the city of Dalian in north-eastern China’s Liaoning province.
The hospital spokesman said: ‘We are cautiously optimistic he will make a full recovery but for the moment he will have to stay in hospital for treatment.’
Police are still looking for the illegal driver and studying CCTV footage to try and get a clue as to his identity.
