Proposals for stringent taxi driver checks in Mansfield

Taxi drivers in Mansfield could undergo tough regulations in light of the Rotherham sex scandal.

Operation Jay found that up to 1,400 youngsters were abused in South Yorkshire between 1997 and 2013, and that taxi drivers played a ‘prominent role’.

As a result, Mansfield District Council’s licensing committee unanimously voted to introduce a new safeguarding course for Hackney Carriage and private hire drivers.

As part of the new conditions, drivers must undergo checks to determine if a driver has a criminal history and pass an NVQ in road passenger transport.

Drivers must also present a certificate of good conduct id they have lived outside the UK for longer than six months.

They will learn the protocol if they suspect abuse is taking place.

The course, which will take between two and three hours, will involve the presentation of an educational DVD and a discussion. All existing drivers must attend the course within the year.

The issue will go before the next full council meeting.

Chairman of the licensing committee at Mansfield District Council, Coun John Smart gave his full backing to the safeguarding course.

He said: “It’s highly unlikely that what happened in Rotherham could happen in Mansfield, but we have to take precautions.

“It’s important we take what steps we can, and we have a duty of care to our customers.

“Hopefully we can have a positive response from the taxi companies, because I would hate to see all our drivers being labelled as sex traffickers.”

So they don't need a DBS then?

If you can't give a UK address for the last 5 years you will have a problem obtaining a DBS.

I don't like these certificates tbh, if you can't obtain a DBS then wait until you can.

How reliable are these certificates of good conduct one has to wonder. Id say as reliable as Michael Fish's weather forecast

Ironic really as this was the council who gave licenses to child molesters.

A CONTROVERSIAL decision to grant a taxi driver's licence to a local man who has convictions for gross indecency with children has sparked outrage among other drivers.

The row has erupted after it emerged that the man has a criminal record of more than 20 convictions — including three for indecency with boys and girls.

ACE ABC taxi driver Nigel Marchant said people in the trade 'went crazy' when they found out about the council's decision to grant the licence.

"The people I work with went ballistic," he said. "How has he got a badge? It makes a mockery of the Criminal Record Bureau checks.

"It's costing us 33 for checks for the safety of the public to make sure we are safe to drive and he has a list of convictions, including gross indecency with children, and he's been granted a licence."

Do we know this man? I thought he worked in ASHFIELD :D

In a recent court case, Manchester City Council was criticised for granting a licence to a Hackney Carriage driver who had convictions for kerb crawling and assaulting a teenage girl.

It seems that councils need to put there own house in order, before they start on taxi drivers, I had an email from someone in mansfield, and he said it would make know difference,as most of the vehicles there are from ASHFIELD and Bolsover, he also said a company in mansfield had been granted 74 Hackney plates from Bolsover, last year there were only 7 hackneys in total.
