Manchester United taxi sting catches latest victim

ANOTHER taxi driver has been prosecuted as part of council sting operations following Manchester United home games at Old Trafford.

In the latest conviction a Rossendale Council licensed hackney carriage driver was caught picking up a fare and driving without insurance.

Fazal Ur Rahman, of Belmont Road, Bolton, was convicted at Trafford Magistrates Court on February 13.

Rahman, 34, pleaded guilty to illegal plying for hire and driving without insurance.

He was fined a total of £240, given six penalty points on his licence, ordered to pay costs of £492.61 and a victim surcharge of £20.

The conviction follows checks conducted at the end of the Manchester United game against West Ham United on September 27.

He was one of a number of drivers caught out after being approached by two Trafford Council officers posing as potential customers, while parked up on Chester Road.

The officers confirmed with him that he was free to take them into Manchester.

The operation was one of a series planned for this season, in response to reports to the council of widespread problems with illegal plying around the ground on match days.

Executive member for environment and operations, councillor John Reilly said: "The fact that this is one of a number of similar cases being brought by Trafford Council reinforces the fact we will take whatever steps necessary to protect local people.

“Only Trafford licensed hackney carriages can be hailed in the street without a booking.

“These prosecutions should send a strong message to those drivers thinking of flouting the law. We will not tolerate illegal activity, and will do everything in our powers to ensure there is fair competition across the borough."

Low standards and cheap fees, no doubt.
