Anger over rise in Leeds Bradford Airport drop-off fee

Drop-off charges at Leeds Bradford Airport have risen by 50%, prompting anger from motorists.

Drivers now have to pay £3 instead of £2 to access the area outside the main terminal building for up to 30 minutes.

Taxi driver Kevin Allen said it was a "kick in the teeth" for customers who brought money into the airport.

Leeds Bradford Airport said there was a free one-hour parking zone a couple of minutes away from the airport.

Mr Allen, owner of private hire firm ASAP in Wetherby, said: "It's scandalous.

"The airport is busting at the seams with travellers so they get a lot of revenue."

'Plain greedy'

He added: "What do we get for this £3? If you park in the free zone there's no covered walkway for bad weather.

"What about families with lots of luggage or elderly and disabled people?"

Nicky Midgley tweeted: "Just plain greedy... the side roads will be busier than ever from now on."

Another airport user, Harry tweeted: "That's absolutely shameful. What planet do their management live on? LBIA are so out of touch with reality."

The rise is the latest in a long-running row about 'kiss and drop' charges at the airport, which were brought in 2011.

There was uproar last year when the airport's owners increased the charge for large vehicles from £2 to £6.

According to figures from the Civil Aviation Authority, 15 out of 31 airports now impose some sort of charge.

Several airports, including Blackpool, Cardiff and Stanstead, offer free drop-off services, but not at the terminal building.

Was that because of a fault with the payment machine? I dropped off on Friday morning and they were trying to fix the payment machine so i didn't have to pay.
