Councillor 'appalled' that former Mayor is still a taxi licence holder in Milton Keynes

A UKIP councillor is 'appalled' that the disgraced former Milton Keynes Mayor, Subhan Shafiq, is still a taxi licence holder in the city.

David Nash, who is UKIP’s only serving councillor, expressed his concerns over the private hire and hackney carriage taxi licences that are currently still active under his name.

Mr Shafiq stepped down from his post as mayor in August 2014 - as revealed by MKWeb at the time - after he provided a character reference for a serial rapist.

And Cllr Nash believes that the scandal is far from over.

He said: “We still have an issue with our ex-mayo who still holds two taxi licences, one a hackney licence and one a private hire licence.

“For a man in his position, having done what he has done, to hold two taxi licences currently is completely appalling!

“I disagree with it and wish I could do something about it, but I’m against 56 other councillors who don’t agree with me it appears.

“It’s not history, it’s still ongoing.”

The council have had to respond to the handling of the crisis, which angered many local residents.

Nash is one of those who feel that the scandal could have been handled more proactively.

He said: “I think it’s not been handled very well by the Council that’s the problem.

“We have uncovered some serious issues with taxi drivers in Milton Keynes and the councils main priority must be the safety and security of the people in Milton Keynes.

“If it were my choice the councillors involved with the taxi scandal would be forced to resign.

“I don’t doubt Carole Mills (Chief Executive of the Council) in terms of her stance; however, I do doubt some of the political parties and councillors in terms of their stance.

“What I’m seeing is politics being put before people.”

Milton Keynes Council confirmed that Mr Shafiq is currently a holder of two taxi licences but failed to respond to Mr Nash’s comments.
