TAXI LICENCES: Committee working to tighten up guideline regulations in Milton Keynes The taxi licencing row has caused licence guidelines to be looked at again A committee is working to tighten up guidance for taxi licences to both councillors and taxi drivers. Milton Keynes Council adopted its ‘statement of taxi licensing policy’ in September 2014 - offering guidance on how and when licences may be awarded or revoked. It followed an internal council audit that found a decision to award a convicted rapist licences for private hire vehicles and hackney carriages followed policy at the time. It is hoped that making the new document clearer and more assertive will lower the chances of people with sex offences being able to gain a hackney carriage licence. Councillor Dave Lewis is one of three councillors, along with Catriona Morris and Chris Williams, to be evaluating the document. He told MKWeb: “We’ve been going through the nitty gritty details of the document. The spirit of the policy has not changed at all, but we are going through it to make sure it is completely without doubt. “There were a lot of examples where the word ‘may’ be used. This new document will make the council’s intentions crystal clear.” It is expected taxi firms will be given the opportunity to discuss the document ahead of it going to cabinet. Well I don't know about you, but the appointment of 3 councillors who have little knowledge of licensing to scrutinise this document certainly fills me with confidence
