Brighton and Hove cabbie loses licence after drink drive conviction

A cabbie who worked in Brighton and Hove has had his licence revoked after being convicted of drink driving.

Another can no longer carry passengers after a road rage incident.

The unnamed drink driver would also have been banned from driving as well although his name and other details of his conviction were not made public.

The case was brought up at the Brighton and Hove City Council Licensing Committee which met at Hove Town Hall this afternoon (Thursday 5 March).

The drink-driving cabbie was one of ten included in a list of suspensions, revocations and formal warnings since the last Licensing Committee meeting on Thursday 20 November.

In the other cases a taxi driver had an application to renew his licence refused on medical grounds, one had his licence suspended on medical grounds and another had his licence suspended pending the outcome of court proceedings.

One cabbie had his licence suspended pending the outcome of a prosecution for motoring offences while five drivers were given formal warnings, one for flipping.

Hackney carriage officer Martin Seymour said that flipping was the name for a private hire driver picking up someone from the street without a booking.

At the previous meeting of the Licensing Committee 11 cases were reported.

Three of them were drivers who had their licences revoked after motoring convictions and two had their applications to renew a licence refused on medical grounds.

One driver had an application for a licence refused because of a previous conviction while another had an application to renew a licence turned down after a road rage incident with another driver.

Four drivers were given formal warnings.

In my considered opinion the standard of licensed driver in B&H has deteriated in the last 10 years.

We have more smack-heads, cheats and thieves driving cabs than we have ever had.
