I think reviewing fares annually isn't such a bad thing, especially if any fare rise is based on increased costs. The problem with not having a yearly review, and if need be a rise, is that if you leave it for years the increase is huge and p***es punters off big time.

Of course, that assumes that fares are rising in line with costs, but that's very often not the case. For example, the article says the trade wanted a 100% increase in waiting time charges, whereas in fact the got 50%. So what justifies that, in two years, a 5%(?) rise in labour costs, say? Of course, such irrational rises can be useful in restricted areas, where the increase can feed through to plate premiums without any other ill-effects for the trade. (While we do live in an era of generally stable prices, a caveat needs to be entered with regard to fuel prices). |
