Minicab driver in court accused of raping young woman passenger A young woman tried to stop a taxi driver raping her when she got into his vehicle following an evening at a friend’s house, a court has heard. The woman, who cannot be named, told the High Court in Stirling the driver took her down a badly lit dead end and had sex with her despite her protests. A swab taken after the alleged incident on November 27, 2010 matched the DNA of 48-year-old Arshad Mohammed from Glasgow, who was later arrested. After watching The X-Factor show at a friend’s house in Govan, the woman got the minicab to another friend’s home in Neilston, and was quoted a £15 fare. She said she got into the minicab in Govan and Mohammed had driven her to the dead-end lane near Main Street in Neilston before dropping off near her destination. On Tuesday, she told the court: "I was shouting ‘please gonnae leave me’, but he wouldn't leave me." She said she had been wearing pyjamas, trainers, underwear and a coat and said she was "scared" when the driver got stopped the minicab and got into the back seat with her. She continued: "He put the locks on so I wouldn't get out of the car. He tried to get my clothes off. He was trying to unfasten my jammie top. I tried to push him away. "I was shouting for somebody to come and help me, but nobody was around." The woman, who is now 24 years old, said she entered the minicab in Govan and he had driven her to the dead-end in Neilston, Renfrewshire. After the alleged incident he dropped her off near her destination in Neilston, and told her "see you after, princess". She said: "I was terrified. I went round to my friend's house and chapped the door and she let me in. "I was breaking my heart, crying, when I got in her flat. I told her I just got raped, and she called the police." The jury were told it has been agreed Mohammed had been indicted to appear for trial at the High Court in Glasgow in April 2012 in connection with the allegation, but failed to appear. He was arrested in Norway two years later and extradited back to the UK in August 2014. Mohammed denies abducting the woman and raping her in the private hire car in the lane near Main Street, Neilston. He lodged a special defence of consent, and told police after his arrest that the woman had asked him if he wanted to have sex with her, directed him to the dead end, thanked him afterwards, and said that she would now be able to get a good night's sleep. Mohammed also denies obtaining a fare by fraud and driving a private hire car without a Civic Government (Scotland) Act licence. He is further accused of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner by uttering remarks of a sexual nature to two other women in the course of private hire journeys in Glasgow in March and April 2011. A minicab driver who went on the run for two years after raping a teenager was behind bars last night. A judge told Arshad Mohammed he faced “years” in jail for driving a 19-year-old to a dead-end, climbing on to her and raping her. Mohammed – a married father of teenage daughters – fled to Norway after he was charged but was tracked down and extradited. He told his trial he had consensual sex with the rape victim who then said: “Thank you, driver. Now I can get a good night’s sleep.” He claimed he had a “disability” in his legs that meant he could only have consensual sex. And Pakistan-born Mohammed tried to excuse sleazy comments he made to two 17-year-olds by claiming British children learn about sex early. He lodged a special defence, claiming his victim asked him if he wanted to have sex. A jury took three hours to convict him, by majority, of raping the 19-year-old. Mohammed, 48, was found guilty unanimously of two charges of breach of the peace for his explicit chats with the other girls. Judge Lord Matthews said there was a “substantial sexual element” to the breaches of the peace. The 19-year-old told the High Court in Stirling she got into a cab in Govan, Glasgow, in November 2010. She was wearing pyjamas under her coat after watching The X Factor at a friend’s home. Mohammed – who worked for city firm 50-50 Cabs – drove her to a dead-end in Neilston, Renfrewshire, and stopped the engine. She said: “He put the locks on so I wouldn’t get out of the car … I tried to push him away. “I was shouting for somebody to come and help me but nobody was around.” After he let her go, she went to another friend’s home. She said: “I was breaking my heart, crying, when I got in her flat. I told her I just got raped and she called the police.” During the trial, Mohammed said there were cultural differences in attitudes to sex between Scotland and Pakistan, and here children knew about sex early. Jane Farquharson, prosecuting, asked him if it was a sin in his religion to even think about having sex with someone who wasn’t his wife. He said: “In my religion, in my faith, in my culture, it’s a big sin – but in this culture it happens.” Mohammed was caught when he targeted two other lone, teenage girl passengers several months later. He was held by police in March and April 2011 after they reported him. He asked one of them, a schoolgirl, when she last had sex. He talked to the other girl about sex acts he claimed 13 and 14-year- old girls performed and spoke about young girls losing their virginity. He was required to give police a DNA sample. That matched a swab taken from the rape victim. Mohammed, who holds Italian citizenship, was arrested and appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court in June 2011. He was granted bail but broke it immediately by not handing in his passport. Then he failed to appear at the High Court in Glasgow in April 2012. He was arrested in Norway on a European Arrest Warrant two years later and extradited last August. Lord Matthews placed Mohammed on the sex offenders’ register and said he faced a sentence of “years”. But he then fled abroad and was arrested in Norway on a European Arrest Warrant in 2013 and extradited to the UK in August 2014. Yesterday at the High Court in Glasgow, judge Lord Matthews told Mohammed: "While acting as a minicab driver you took advantage of a lone female at night. "The court must do what it can both to punish that sort of behaviour, to deter others and to let women know we will do what we can to protect them." Defence counsel Kevin McCallum said: "Mr Mohammed continues to protest his innocence to the rape. "As far as the sexual remarks it may be down to cultural issues he didn't intend to cause alarm to these teenage girls." Pakistan-born Mohammed, who holds Italian citizenship, was convicted following a six-day trial at the High Court in Stirling. The court heard that the rape victim had got into his 50 50 Cabs Skoda minicab in her pyjamas, with a coat on top, following an evening watching television at a friend's house. Mohammed abducted her and drove the victim to a secluded spot in Renfrewshire where he raped her. After the sex attack he told her : "See you after, princess." The court heard the woman went round to a friend's house in tears and the police were called. Mohammed was caught after he targeted two other lone, teenage passengers. He was detained by police twice, in March and April 2011, after making explicit sexual remarks to the teenagers. Police took a DNA sample from Mohammed which matched a swab taken from the rape victim. He fled the country and was arrested in Norway on a European Arrest Warrant two years later, and extradited back to the UK in August 2014. He lodged a special defence of consent, and claimed that the rape victim had asked him if he wanted to have sex. He claimed she said afterwards, "Thank you driver, now I can get a good night's sleep." In court, he claimed a "disability" in his legs made it only possible for him to have consensual sex. god that has to be the sloppiest piece of reporting I've seen so is he a Minicab driver a Private hire driver which he would be if their quoting the CGSA or a taxi driver seeing as that's what he was supposedly driving. also who gave him the vehicle? surely they should be in the dock for allowing an unlicensed driver to drive their vehicle be it a hack or a PH or was it an unlicensed vehicle ?
