Taxi firm seeks thousands of pounds from council after Leicester rail station decision is overruled A planning inspector has overturned a decision to refuse a taxi firm permission to continue running an office from Leicester's railway station. Private Hire firm Hansom Taxis set up in the former barber's shop next to the station around 18 months ago. It was granted temporary permission by Leicester City Council but was turned down when it tried to extend the agreement. Planning officers had recommended approval but councillors refused permission because they said it would cause parking problems and harm the "efficient operation of the highway" on Station Street and London Road. The RMT union, which represents hackney carriage drivers, and Centrebus had objected to the office being there, However planning inspector Roger Catchpole, who considered the appeal, has overruled the councillors. He visited the site to see what effect the business was having and said: "I observed a hackney carriage and private hire vehicle, not associated with the appellant's business, dropping customers in the bus stop clearway zone. "I accept that vehicles stop on London Road outside the appeal premises and that this has caused significant traffic congestion problems that have impeded the free movement of buses and other vehicles. "However, I have no evidence before me to suggest that any of the 29 civil enforcement notices issued in 2014 were associated with the appellant's business. "I am not persuaded by the council's assertion that the continued use of the site could exacerbate the existing situation. "I find this vague generalisation to be unsubstantiated by the facts, despite frequent observation of the site at different times of the day by the council's own officers." A spokesman for Hansom Taxis said: "We are relieved because there were 50 jobs on the line if we could not continue and now we can carry on running our business. "There was never a good reason to reject this and we are grateful to the inspector." He said the firm had applied for council to be made to pay costs and said the bill could run into thousands of pounds. A planning inspector will make a separate decision on whether to award costs.
