Northampton cab driver must pay £370 after being caught smoking in his taxi

A cab driver has been ordered to pay £370 after he was caught smoking in his vehicle three times.

Phillip Steele, from Pembroke Gardens in Spencer, pleaded guilty at Northampton Magistrates’ Court to three charges of smoking in a smoke free place. Steele had to appear in court after he failed to respond to a penalty notice sent to him by Northampton Borough Council.

The presiding Magistrate said: “Smoking in a place of work is a criminal offence and, as the taxi is your place of work, you broke the law, whether there was someone else in it or not.

“Smoking puts other people’s lives at risk and it is not up to you to make that decision for them.”

Steele was fined £50 for each offence and was also ordered to pay a £200 contribution to the £450 court costs, as well as a £20 victim surcharge.

Why are the Government still taking billions a year in revenue if they put people's lives at risk?
