Passenger who threw up attacked Carlisle taxi driverA Carlisle man who lashed out at a taxi driver has been given a community punishment.
Mathew Dudley, 27, of Osborne Avenue, off Wigton Road, pleaded guilty to assaulting Erkan Eden on January 29 this year.
District judge Sam Goozee sitting at the magistrates’ court in Carlisle heard that Dudley was in a taxi being driven by Mr Erkan towards the city centre, when he vomited.
Mr Erkan said that he would require money to pay for the taxi to be cleaned and pulled over.
Dudley agreed to pay, but took exception when Mr Erkan said he would not take him any further.
John Moran, prosecuting, explained that a security guard from Asda, Lekh Gurung, then intervened.
He said: “Dudley then punched Mr Erkan to the left side of the head.
“As he punched him, he also caught the security guard as well.”
Geoff Clapp, defending, provided Judge Goozee with two character references. He told the court: “He wants to make a public apology and accepts that he had too much to drink. He later met the taxi driver by chance and offered to pay £50 towards cleaning the cost of the taxi.”
Sentencing Dudley to a 12-month community order with supervision, Judge Goozee said: “Taxi drivers have a difficult enough job as it is, especially late at night.
“There is no excuse.”
Dudley was also told he must complete 50 hours of unpaid work and attend a thinking skills session. He must also pay £75 in compensation to Mr Erkan and £50 to Mr Gurung in addition to court costs of £85.
