Uber applies for licence to operate in Windsor - potentially only its sixth operation in the UK

A FIRM which claims to be 'evolving the way the world moves’ looks set to drive into Windsor and Maidenhead – its fifth UK location.

Uber has applied to operate in the Royal Borough and looks set to be given the green light for a licence.

The firm, which only operates in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds in the UK, works by travellers using their mobile apps to book taxi services from a stock of drivers signed up to the network in the immediate local area to where the passenger is.

The service can be paid for via mobile devices and passengers can choose the vehicle and driver they wish, even being told how much the fare would cost at the time of booking.

An Uber spokesman said: “Uber has ambitions to set up in all major cities and towns eventually. We have got applications in a number of cities and Windsor is one of them. But it is just an application at the moment. We haven’t buttoned down what kind of product it would be and we haven’t got a time frame or anything like that.”

Uber drivers have courted controversy in the past with concerns raised over passenger safety though these problems have largely been reported outside of the UK.

Alan Barwise, senior licensing officer at the Royal Borough, said: “I cannot see any reason really why we couldn’t grant it unless they are not fit and proper.

“They are saying in the last four months they have had 4,000 requests from people in Windsor to use Uber which I suppose is due to how close we are to London.”

The application is unlikely to please Hackney Carriage drivers who have already complained to the council on numerous occasions since licences were deregulated in 2013 – meaning anyone can apply for a licence. Drivers have claimed this has threatened their ability to earn a living and there are not enough ranks, which have become overcrowded.

One carriage driver of three years told The Observer last week that drivers had even planned to 'shut down Maidenhead’ by parking up their vehicles in the centre of the town in protest.

Thousands of taxi drivers bought parts of central London to a standstill last year in protest against Uber.

Lol.

And the same thing will happen when the taxi drivers in London protested.

Uber gained free publicity, and their app is downloaded with an increase of 850%.

Not sure if the penny will ever drop that Uber love all publicity, maybe even the bad stuff.
