Shelton taxi driver Rais Ali sold drugs to undercover cop CABBIE Rais Ali has been jailed for more than four years after he sold class A drugs to an undercover cop. The 27-year-old sold heroin and crack cocaine to the officer on numerous dates over several months. The transactions took place in a supermarket car park, residential streets and outside a medical centre, often when he was behind the wheel of his cab. Now Ali has been jailed for four years and four months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. Prosecutor Kevin Jones said an undercover police officer was given the defendant's phone number in September 2013 and within a few minutes Ali sent him a text and they arranged to meet. The defendant arrived at a Lidl car park driving a taxi and supplied the officer with 0.346 grams of heroin for £20. He told the officer he could also supply crack cocaine and added he was available at all times. Ali met the officer and sold him similar amounts of heroin and crack cocaine for £20 on numerous occasions. Mr Jones said: "The deals took place in locations specified by the defendant, in public places, shop car parks, residential streets and outside a medical centre. "Four exchanges happened when he was driving his taxi." Police arrested the defendant at his girlfriend's home and he was seen to throw items out the window. They were recovered and found to be 0.354 grams of crack cocaine and 32 packages of 'speedballs' – a combination of drugs. They also recovered £4,155 cash. The defendant conceded he was involved in dealing drugs but said he was under duress and had received threats from a man he would not name. Ali, of Havelock Place, Shelton, pleaded guilty to eight charges of supplying class A drugs and two counts of possession of class A drugs. Andrew Baker, mitigating, said the defendant was supplying relatively low amounts to test purchasers. Mr Baker said: "He immediately stated he was acting under duress. There are other individuals higher up the chain who put pressure on him to start and continue with this." Mr Baker conceded it was an aggravating feature that Ali was selling the drugs during the course of his employment as a taxi driver. Judge David Fletcher told Ali: "Much of the drug dealing was carried out by you under the cover of your employment as a taxi driver. "You knew what you were doing and you were doing it for financial gain." Read more: http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/Shelton- ... z3W2nPYApz |
