Exmouth cannabis grower says £78,000 came from taxi driving, not drugs A convicted drug grower is disputing an attempt to seize his assets because he says £78,000 came from taxi driving rather than selling cannabis. Colin Wonnacott is facing confiscation of cash or property under the Proceeds of Crime Act after having been caught with £3,000 of home grown cannabis last year. He is no longer working as a cabbie because he was banned from driving after admitted being under the influence of cannabis while behind the wheel. Wonnacott, aged 46, of Gorlin Close, Exmouth, appeared at Exeter Crown Court almost exactly a year ago. In that case he admitted drug driving, production and possession of cannabis and was jailed for 16 months, suspended for a year, banned for driving for a year, and ordered to do 100 hours unpaid community work. He returned to the same court for a hearing under the Proceeds of Crime Act in which the prosecution are seeking to seize £78,000 which they say he made through selling drugs. Mr Stephen Nunn, defending, asked Judge Phillip Wassall to adjourn the case to allow more time for discussions in the hope of reaching an agreed figure. He said:”He says the vast majority of the £78,000 was from genuine income from his work as a self employed taxi driver.” The Judge adjourned the case and said he hoped the issues can be resolved before the next hearing. In the original case the court heard how Wonnacott threw a bag containing £3,000 worth of home grown cannabis over a hedge to try to stop the police finding it after the crash at Ottery St Mary. Officers suspected he was under the influence of drugs and arrested him. They later found more cannabis and 15 plants at his home. Wonnacott was a heavy user of the drug who took it to relieve muscle pain after a recent operation and who had smoked a joint just half an hour before the crash. Wonnacott was driving too fast and erratically on the B 3190 near Ottery when he crashed into a Mini and a van during a misjudged overtaking manoeuvre. Police found cash in his car and a bag of cannabis which he threw away which was worth between £2,500 and £4,500. Read more: http://www.exeterexpressandecho.co.uk/E ... z3W4ELaMcg |
