Drunk 'birthday boy' Peter Clarke, 52, threatened taxi driver with metal bar in racist attack

RACIST yob Peter Clarke abused a taxi driver before threatening to burn and smash up his cab.

The 52-year-old brandished a metal bar as another man waved a kitchen knife forcing the terrified cabbie to lock himself in his vehicle.

Now Clarke has been jailed for 21 months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court after a judge described the offence as 'shocking'.

Prosecutor Nazneen Sultan said the defendant and another man caught a taxi from Birches Head to Meir on November 16, 2013.

They gave the driver £20 and he said he would give them their change when he dropped them off.

The other man was drunk and twice opened a door while the cab was moving.

When the driver pulled up in Hartwell Road, Meir, Clarke ran in a house.

The driver tried to pass the other man his change but he would not take it and racially abused the cabbie.

The man leaned into the driver's door and took the keys from the ignition before he ran in the house.

Clarke then came outside and told the driver to move his vehicle or he would burn it and smash it up.

Miss Sultan said: "The driver got in his car and locked the doors. The other man came out the house with a kitchen knife. The driver contacted his base and asked for the police to be called.

"The other man banged on the driver's door and made threats.

"Clarke was moving around the car telling the driver to move it or he would smash it up. Clarke had something in his hand but the driver could not see what it was.

"Other taxis arrived and the two defendants approached those vehicles and made threats. One of the drivers said Clarke had a piece of metal in his hand."

Clarke, of Hartwell Road, who has 105 previous offences, pleaded guilty to affray.

Joanne Wallbanks, mitigating, said Clarke was not involved in the initial part of the affray as he had gone inside the house.

She said the incident happened on Clarke's birthday and he had been out and had a lot to drink.

Miss Wallbanks said: "He behaved in a manner he is not proud of."

Jailing Clarke, Judge David Fletcher said: "This was a shocking offence.

"It was a gross example of racist bullying behaviour.

"It was two on to one, a protracted incident, punctuated by vile racist abuse, not for the first time in your criminal career."
