Call to ban off-duty taxis from ‘pedestrianised’ Aberdeen street

By Andy McLaren, 7 Apr 2015 10.00am Evening Express

TRANSPORT chiefs have said it will be “necessary” to stop off-duty taxis from using the “central core” of Union Street.

Regional transport partnership Nestrans has asked Aberdeen City Council to consider the possibility that taxis which are off-duty, those which don’t have passengers, and taxis which are crossing the city to get to other locations should not be allowed to drive on the “central core” of Union Street.

Nestrans made the suggestion as part of its feedback on the local authority’s draft masterplan for the city.

The draft plans for the city centre propose banning cars from both Union Street and Broad Street in a bid to help create new civic space.

The draft masterplan currently states both buses and taxis would still have access.

However, in a response to the city council a report by Nestrans states: “It will be necessary to restrict through traffic from the central core, such as off duty taxis, taxis without passengers and taxis crossing the city.”

Russell McLeod, managing director of Aberdeen’s Rainbow City Taxis, said the proposal will have a “huge effect” on the taxi trade if it goes ahead.

He said: “It is hardly pedestrianisation if they are allowing buses to use Union Street.

“We are part of public transport.”
