John McShane, 49, passed away from his injuries in hospital after being hit by the black Hackney cab on St Anne Street, on the edge of Liverpool city centre, in the early hours of this morning.
A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and later released on bail.
Road traffic police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy.
Mr McShane was said to have suffered massive head and chest injuries.
Taxi crash on St Anne Street
They are keen to speak to the driver of a vehicle who may have seen Mr McShane shortly prior to the collision with the taxi.
This vehicle travelled along St Anne Street in the direction of Liverpool at 4.44am, police said.
A spokesman said: “CCTV suggests that this driver may have clearly been aware of the pedestrian crossing the road.”
St Anne Street was closed in both directions this morning while collision investigators examined the road and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
