List of complaints against taxi drivers revealed A STRING of extraordinary complaints have had to be made about local taxi drivers over the last three years, it has emerged. Among the worst offenders was a cabbie who refused to take a father and his disabled child 300 yards up the road. An official complaint was made against the driver after they declined the fare in Railway Approach, East Grinstead. The shocking snub is just one of the incidents which has led to almost 100 complaints about taxi drivers being made to Mid Sussex District Council every single year. One driver refused to pick up a blind man and his guide dog, while another demanded an iPhone from a 20-year-old woman when she failed to meet the full cost of a fare. There have been numerous reports of one particular driver regularly burning his rubbish in car parks, one of a cabbie urinating in bushes in public view and several complaints about dangerous driving. Figures obtained by the Courier show that the council received 275 complaints about taxi drivers in the three years up to February 10, 2015. One driver is reported to have fallen asleep at the wheel and crashed into a parked car, while others have been reported for speeding, overcharging and even drink-driving. One customer also complained that he had to drive himself to Gatwick Airport to avoid missing his flight because the taxi driver he booked was unable to locate his address in Hammerwood. The complaints are not only filed by passengers. Some cabbies have reported being abused by their colleagues, while others are alleged to have stolen customers and cut queues at certain locations. But one of the most common reports is of vehicles operating without door plates or signs, suggesting they are unlicensed. Hackney Carriages may pick up passengers from any of the authorised taxi ranks in Mid Sussex, or if hailed in the street. They may also pick up passengers who have made an advanced booking. In comparison, private hire vehicles can only pick up passengers who have made an advanced booking through a licensed private hire operator. "There are currently 527 taxi drivers licensed in Mid Sussex," said Lynne Standing, head of service for housing, environmental health and building control at Mid Sussex District Council. "Every taxi company, driver and vehicle is subject to stringent tests and conditions. "The vast majority of taxi journeys in Mid Sussex pass without incident but when a complaint is made, we carry out a thorough investigation and take appropriate action when necessary." Alan Willis, director of taxi firm Road Runners, which has an office on Railway Approach in East Grinstead, added that his firm often receives up to 3,000 calls for cabs across the county every single day and that some complaints are inevitable. "Every taxi company has its own terms and conditions imposed by the licensing authority, and we have an internal system of how and when to deal with customers' complaints," he said. "Of course, customers have a right to complain, and it's our duty to care and understand what they are saying to identify and address our weaknesses. "If a customer has a bad trip, we will look into it and, where possible, we will compensate them. "Taxis can run late for a number of reasons, such as roadworks or road traffic collisions, and sometimes it is difficult for customers to understand that. "But sometimes it's not even our fault. We can be given wrong addresses and people can leave us waiting too long, and that in turn leads to delays to our other customers. People will always find things to moan about, but we are just trying to run a successful business." Read more: http://www.eastgrinsteadcourier.co.uk/L ... z3WbXhPwIe |

I suspect he wanted it until he got his fare, and I would suggest others follow suit. If it was otherwise the driver could be charged with theft or possibly robbery, and that isn't in the council's remit to enforce. |
