Councillors to decide on taxi change consultation

A PUBLIC consultation could be held on proposed changes to County Durham’s taxi licensing rules.

Durham County Council’s current policy, which was adopted in 2011, is due to be reviewed.

The council’s cabinet will be recommended on Wednesday, April 15, to seek the views of operators, drivers and the public.

The 12-week process was focus on proposed changes such as possible vehicle age restrictions and engine emission standards, the use of vehicle top signs and other vehicle identifications, and conditions for limousines.

Other topics are the suspension of licensed vehicles if the owner/driver fails to attend a scheduled vehicle test, numeracy and literacy tests for new drivers, and more stringent safeguarding and child protection measures.

Terry Collins, the council’s director of neighbourhood services, said: “We want to review our current policy to make sure that it safeguards those who use taxis licensed by us.

“We also want a policy that supports the majority of licensed drivers who behave appropriately, look after their vehicles and who provide a high standard of service to their customers.”

Blimey, a council that appears to be trying to improve driver's standards.

Rather than licensing anything from anywhere.
