Security staff and taxi drivers to get training

POLICE are taking a new approach to help prevent rape and serious sexual offences – by asking people to intervene if someone appears to be at risk.

Previous campaigns have focused on consent, but Sussex police is hoping to tackle the crime in a new way.

Chief Inspector Katy Woolford said: ‘After months of research and talking to partner agencies and people working within the night-time economy, we’re urging people to intervene when someone appears to be vulnerable or at risk. Door supervisors, taxi drivers, bar staff and groups of friends or the wider public need to take responsibility to protect others from those who may cause them harm.

‘We would be failing in our response if, as with any other crime, we did not recognise that there are victims and urge them to take steps to minimise risks and help safeguard others from becoming victims. This is the first time we have taken such an approach to raise awareness, with the first phase urging friends to stay together and look after each other, so that no one is left alone or goes off with a stranger.’

Security staff and taxi drivers will be given training on what to do if they notice someone who appears to be vulnerable.

The trade down here have been working with the police over this issue for years.

But it's not an easy issue.

Generally if an experienced driver has concerns, then he has concerns for a reason.

What he does about it is the issue, I would suggest he doesn't intervene physically just calls 999 when he drops, and let the police do the intervening.

What, you use common sense? You didn't to do course to work out the strategy?
