Nottingham's Station Street could be pedestrianised - and taxi rank moved to a nearby car park Station Street could be pedestrianised as part of a £1.5 million makeover to improve one of the main gateways into Nottingham. The plans include moving the city's longest taxi rank – on the street outside the railway station – to the second floor of the station's multi-storey car park. Work could be complete by autumn 2016 and would mean only bicycles could enter the road between Carrington Street and Trent Street. Nottingham City Council says its plans would complete its "southern gateway" and pedestrians welcomed the move, but taxi drivers said the plan would "create a monster". A public consultation on the scheme, which would also involve banning vehicles except buses and cycles from Carrington Street and increasing the number of parking spaces in Trent Street, begins tomorrow. It would follow the £60 million revamp of Nottingham Station which was completed in early 2014. Steve Hunt, the council's head of traffic and safety, said: "People arriving in Nottingham by train would be greeted by a much more pedestrian-friendly environment and be able to catch a taxi without going outside." But Jamil Ahmed, chairman of Nottingham Hackney Association, said he has already organised an "emergency" meeting over the plans. He said passengers would have to walk further to reach a rank and fares could be more expensive. "You have got to maintain Station Street taxi rank because people have become accustomed to it for decades," he said. "If we have to operate from the second floor of the multi-storey car park it will cost the customer more just to be sat in congestion – there is only one exit and taxis would be competing with drivers at peak times. By waiting in those queues it will add money on to every fare." Taxis currently have to make a U-turn at the top of the road, by Carrington Street, since changes last year. The council added a bollard after accusing taxi drivers of flouting the rules to pick up customers on Carrington Street. Cabbie Amjad Aziz said: "Every time the council comes up with a big scheme it seems to go against taxi drivers. "I can't see the logic. It would also mean anyone heading to The Meadows, or to the west of the city, will have to pay more because we will have to drive all the way around the station. It would add £2.50 on to every fare." But pedestrians welcomed the move. Sarah Walsh, 18, of Strelley, works in admin at the council's Loxley House offices. She said: "It will make it easier to get to work. It can get quite congested down here, especially at peak times. If it was pedestrianised it would be nicer to walk down." Peter Kay, 56, of Bramcote, added: "I suppose it would make it a more interesting area and clean it up a bit. Perhaps it could become the Station Quarter? "But we do have to think about the taxi drivers and local businesses as well. It would be a shame to see them struggle." Sandra Parsons, who has worked at Granby Kitchen for 19 years, thought the plan could lose the café business. "People know this is where they get a taxi," she said. "Some people come in and ask us to ring a taxi for them while they have a cob. And a lot of taxi drivers themselves stop in." And Jonathan Allington, from Zero's Barber Shop, added: "I'm sure it will look stunning but I'm worried for smaller businesses. I think I'll lose a lot of my trade." In November last year, plans to pedestrianise Lower Parliament Street outside the Victoria Street were unveiled, which would see a square created in front of the shopping centre. A taxi rank in a multi-storey car-park is madness. Why expect punters to pay waiting whilst they queue to leave. |

The pick up and drop off for private hire and non Notts Hackneys is already in the multi storey. And yes it is a nightmare for the customers as well. |
