Abandoned in early hours by cabbie

AT 2.30am on Sunday, March 22, my daughter was leaving the cruise ship Oceana and went to get a taxi from the rank outside Leisure World.

The taxi driver asked for money up front. She told him she only had £10 on her so he took that.

The taxi got to Kennedy Road in Maybush and the fare had reached £10. We live in Wittering Road in Lordshill which is around five minutes drive from there in a car, but he refused to continue the journey and told her to get out even though she would have paid him once she got home.

So he basically left my 20-year-old daughter stranded in the street in the early hours.

How is this acceptable?

Anything could have happened. We were told the same thing happened to a boy in Lordswood recently and he ended up getting beaten up.

To me it seems taxi drivers no longer care what happens to young people.

can understand both sides of this story.


in fairness the driver should never have taken the hire if he didn't intend to take the chance of getting paid the rest of the amount on arrival.

but how many times in this trade do we get chancers and non payers who the police and courts show no interest in?


one of the great advantages of being able to take cards. you get the aaah I've no cash i'll pay you at the other end or my Mum will pay you etc etc.


its a case of get your card out/mum on the phone

They assume taxis are non profit making organisations, can't blame the taxi driver if young missy didn't put enough by for the taxi trip home.

That said i'd have made sure she got home safely.........but i've been stung before with folk saying they'll square up at journeys end only to have them leg it.

I can blame the driver, if he didn't want to take the chance of not being paid all of the fare he shouldn't have picked her up in the first place. Once he accepted the fare he should have took her all the way home, he was only 5 mins or so away anyway according to the story. Sometimes you have to take a chance and in these circumstances the risk was very low and wouldn't have broken the bank even if he hadn't have been paid the rest of the money.
When I first started driving a taxi (too long ago) I was told that I would find more money dropped on the floor or down the back of the seat over a year than what I would lose in runners etc, and I still think this holds true.

I certainly make more in tips than I have ever lost in runners.

Just a point on the " only 5 mins".......is that @ 30 mph Or 60mph because the one is a 5 mile detour and the other one (stating the obvious) is 10 mile detour......it all becomes relevant at the time, unfortunately with the pizz takers it does not seem to matter as they never state the mileage........just the "Only 5 minutes bit" :doubt:

Either way, if he knew she only had a tenner, he should have refused the hire if he wasn't prepared to take the gamble of not getting the rest.

In my experience, runners tend to bump you for the whole fare, not the last couple of quid.

Tbh I would have taken her (depending as to how she came across) home. Having said that what is wrong with a phone call home......mum/dad can you pick me up! Instead of lets.........hang the blame on someone else, no doubt once again someone has spent the best part of their taxi fare.......probably on another drink. In my book if you are big enough to be out at that time of night - then you are big/old enough to take responsibility to get yourself home, instead of the usual bleedin heart stories that are consistently wrecking the trade.

Either way the driver/s would probably have got slated for not taking her, and then we would have mother claiming her little cherub had been left out all night by ALL of the heartless taxi trade.

The report suggests that she had just got off of a cruise ship, now at 02.30 i would suggest that maybe she had been working, getting the ship ready for the next voyage and not out on the lash.

Possibly.

I would suggest that if that was the case - then they would have banking/cash machines available. The fair sex should in reality be taking more responsibilty seeing as they are perceived to be more vulnerable.
