Taxi driver reveals why he wants to be Norwich South’s next MP As a taxi driver, Cengiz Ceker is used to his passengers sounding off about what’s wrong with the country and the problem with politicians. But Mr Ceker has the perfect response for the next person who sits in his taxi and tells him they do not trust any of the parties - ‘vote for me, instead’. The 37-year-old was a last minute addition to the candidates looking to win the Westminster seat for Norwich South, having had to rely on the proceeds of a couple of late long distance fares to London to be sure he could cover the £500 deposit. The independent will get it back if he polls 5pc of votes cast. Mr Ceker, who has lived in Norwich for 15 years after moving from his native Turkey, admits he is “not a political person”. But the former University of East Anglia student said he was motivated to stand because of his passengers’ lack of trust in politicians and his own desire to see Norwich reach its potential. He said: “I’ve been a taxi driver for four or five years and I have talked to thousands of people doing that. “I have heard what they think about everything and I decided to stand because what people were saying was that they don’t trust politicians. “I wanted to stand because it means I can vote for myself and at least I know I will be honest. I wanted to show people there is another option. I want to win as an independent.” The father-of-one, who lives in Colman Road, said he hoped to use the expertise from his travel and tourism academic background to do more for his adopted city. He said: “Norwich is a nice city, but not enough is done to promote it and I think there are people who would rather it stayed that way,, rather than encourage the investment which would improve wages. “I am not a politician. I’m just a taxi driver, but I know a lot about Norwich. I want to say to people that it’s their lives and their choice. “It’s really important that they go and vote because it’s going to form the future of Britain.” “Mr Ceker said he will not be distributing election leaflets and will not be canvassing homes, instead relying on his Twitter profile @cengizceker and his Facebook page to get his message across. Other Norwich South candidates are: Steve Emmens (UK Independence Party); Lesley Grahame (Green Party); Clive Lewis (Labour); Lisa Townsend (Conservative) and Simon Wright (Liberal Democrats). source: http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/taxi_driver ... _1_4046549 |
