Hi all can someone tell me as I use my vehicle for private use as well as private hire is it illegal to remove my rear plate when I am not working as I have it on a magnet thx all I'm new here so be kind

once its licensed its always licensed in so far as the law is concerned

I'd say its a matter of conditions on a localised basis

Why not ask your council?

Ive heard of some councils not allowing the plate to be removed, but ive heard of others allowing it to be covered, the best I can do is basically ask you to ask your council politely - explaining its a family car and it will be displayed when at work - if your reasonable you may be pleasantly surprised

One of our conditions is that the plate is permanently affixed to the rear of the car.

Remember too the plated car can only be driven by a licenced ph/hack driver at all times. In my view, removing the plates could result in other drivers grassing you up for operating illegally. Once a ph/hack, always a ph/hack until it's taken out of service.

Some councils insist on sticker plates which can't be removed, as they wont look them same once you put them back.

As the Captain said, you can't opt in and out of being a licensed vehicle.

If the council says a licensed PH must always have a plate on display, and most do, then by taking the plate off you are in breach of your licensing conditions.

Your council may allow your vehicle to be de-plated at all times, but you will need their permission first.
